Christy Baron's third CD for Chesky is promoted by liner note writer David Finck (who plays bass and wrote two of the originals on this session) as featuring a singer who is a "true communicator." While she is a pleasant singer, she fits more into pop (or AAA, for those who classify by radio terminology) than into jazz. The excessive reliance on empty pop songs, especially the three bland works by Carole King and the friendly but banal "Happy Together" (a huge hit for the Turtles in the 1960s) make this disc of minimal interest to serious jazz fans. There are some successful detours into standards and jazz compositions, including "That Old Devil Moon" and "You Are There" (co-composed by the great Johnny Mandel and the underrated Dave Frishberg). Even though the supporting cast provides more than ample support, the CD doesn't stand up to singers who make jazz their forte rather than a sideline.

As a staunch jazz classicist and a vociferous champion of its traditions, Wynton Marsalis should seem right at home playing an album of jazz standards. And, in fact, he does. Marsalis is well suited to classic, acoustic sets, in part because of his clear, lyrical tone on the trumpet, but mostly because of his love for the music (Marsalis's aversion to avant garde, fusion, and other experimental takes on the genre is well known). The set list of STANDARDS has many of the usual suspects, including "April in Paris," "A Foggy Day," "Django," and "Caravan." It's clear Marsalis isn't out to radically re-invent these tunes, but rather to give them classic renderings, summoning the ghost of early, acoustic post-bop with an appealing sense of balance, beauty, and technical precision.


Review:

Adjective not only for his commitment to jazz education and proliferation (he made Jazz at Lincoln Center an internationally respected name) but also for his calm, controlled, and thoughtful approach to the trumpet. When you hear him drag on the melodic lines of My Ideal (tk 7) � la Miles Davis, or pound on the staccato beats of When It's Sleepytime Down South (tk 1) or float, muted, over the drum beat of Flamingo (tk 14), you recognize the depth of his art and the strength he has in knowing when to push and when to let. The arrangement of April In Paris (tk 12) is a standout of the album - the quartet dramatically changes feels from a hurried straight to a loose swing throughout - highly recommended. Marsalis co-produced this compilation of jazz standards and by choosing unusual standards and unique performances, we see how attentive he is to reinterpreting the shared language of the jazz world.
