The Rolling Stones set includes the albums from the MFSL BOX SET: THE ROLLING STONES (UK version), 12 X 5, OUT OF OUR HEADS (US version), AFTERMATH (UK version), BETWEEN THE BUTTONS (UK version), THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST, BEGGAR'S BANQUET, LET IT BLEED, GET YOUR YA-YA'S OUT!, and HOT ROCKS. To complete the set, MFSL's other titles STICKY FINGERS and SOME GIRLS are also included.
The Rolling Stones set has been in the works for quite awhile and just about never saw the light of day because of the SACD releases. The new SACDs are great sounding and are a lot of fun to listen to. Much of the Stones' material wasn't recorded under the best of conditions. The SACDs often smooth out the characteristic hard-edged sound and bring out some detail lost in the red line.
Nevertheless, the MFSL LPs have a clean, precise sound stage that is somewhat lacking on the SACDs.
They have a less compressed sound and really stand up on their own. In other words, they wouldn't be offered if not felt to be a worthwhile listening experience.

Review by Barry Weber

The Scorpions' third release, In Trance, continues to display their high-energy music, which is impossible to ignore. With the eyebrow-lifting "Dark Lady" as the opening track, the album immediately captures the listener's attention and keeps it all the way until the end. The interesting title track is clearly the best song of the album, but singles such as the fast-paced "Robot Man" and the hard-rocking "Top of the Bill" also stand out as highlights. Excellent singing and powerful music make this the best Scorpions recording working with Uli Jon Roth.

In Trance is the 3rd studio album by the German heavy metal band Scorpions released in 1975.

The original version of the album cover clearly showed the cover model's bare breast hanging down towards the guitar. Later releases have the breast blacked out so that it is not visible. This is the first of many Scorpions album covers that have been censored.

Originally Released In 1970, SHM-CD Release - 2009

With their second album Rides Again, the James Gang came into their own. Under the direction of guitarist Joe Walsh, the group - now featuring bassist Dale Peters - began incorporating keyboards into their hard rock, which helped open up their musical horizons. For much of the first side of Rides Again, the group tear through a bunch of boogie numbers, most notably the heavy groove of "Funk #49." On the second side, the James Gang departs from their trademark sound, adding keyboard flourishes and elements of country-rock to their hard rock. Walsh's songwriting had improved, giving the band solid support for their stylistic experiments. What ties the two sides of the record together is the strength of the band's musicianship, which burns brightly and powerfully on the hardest rockers, as well as on the sensitive ballads. -allmusic

Joe Walsh is one of the most underappreciated musicians in rock music. Whether it be his work with The James Gang, The Eagles or solo work, he consistently makes quality and inspiring rock music. He may have been at his best with this Ohio-based band and Rides On is their finest effort. The album kicks off with a rock classic, the manic "Funk #49" which has a great riff. "The Bomber" shows off Mr. Walsh's guitar prowess with some wicked slide work. The first five tracks are classic arena rock, but the band shows there diversity with the second five tracks that form a song suite of sorts. They are more in the country-rock vein and show a softer side as opposed to the heaviness of the first five tracks. The James Gang never achieved the commercial success they deserved, but Rides Again is a great place to start to get an idea of the quality of this group.

Patricia Barber - Modern Cool (MFSL DSD UDSACD 2003)
Wav | Cue + Log | 735 MB | No Covers | 1998

Chicago pianist and vocalist Patricia Barber is making lots of ears burn. Her torch song touch speaks volumes to jazz vocal fanatics, but she has an adventuresome side that speaks likewise to fans of woollier jazz. Barber's vocal delivery is swaggering and burnished, always angling against oddball time signatures and often dropping weird lyrical science. From e.e. cummings poems, Barber moves into prescient observations on our society: "For company in the 21st century," she sings, "I go to the club, talk through the show / I'm so hip there's nothing about jazz / That I don't know." Trumpeter Dave Douglas and guitarist John McLean add a sharp edge, and the Choral Thunder Vocal Choir give Modern Cool soul-drenched dynamics that push the CD into the realm of instant classics.

"Destroyed" is possibly THE greatest pop punk record of all times! With infectiously catchy Ramones-style songs and lyrics about porn, beer and junk food, this album is a true CLASSIC. [Toxxy]

Destroyed is the second studio album by punk band Sloppy Seconds. It was released in 1989 on Musical Tragedies/Toxic Shock. The album cover is a parody of the Kiss album Destroyer from 1976.

Toxxy sez: There's so many TOTALLY, GREAT songs on this album - the first 12 tracks are simply all killers! - with lyrics there are so goddamn f*ckin' cool and I cannot choose one, two, three etc. favorites, but... "Blackmail" could be my No.1 junk-rock song on "Destroyed". The guitar and bass simply click in absolute "awesomeness", Steve's druming is so infectious that I can't help but "air-drum" along!, and B.A.'s yells is just so...in place, in there, up there, f*ckin' everywhere! And the lyrics...a masterful brain brought us these legendary lines...:

"Sloppy Seconds - Blackmail"

Well, your father's in Bermuda
And the milkman's overjoyed
Your maid is into bondage
And I've got Polaroids

And I was on the corner
When you wrecked your mother's Porsche
But why should I inform her
About your poor misfortune?

'Cause everyone has secrets
But sometimes you get caught
So if it's just between us
My silence can be bought
Blackmail... blackmail

I was looking through your closet
When I found your water bong
Your stash of Turkish hash
And a twelve-inch rubber dong

And I won't tell your family
About your last abortion
So you can call it "bribery"
But I prefer "extortion"

Well, my counselor is a dealer
And the football coach is queer
The school nurse and the dean of boys
Are having an affair

And someone shot the rent-a-cop
And I'm the only witness
But I won't tell you who it was
'Cause it's none of your business

SLOPPY SECONDS and JUNK-ROCK RULES!

Band line-up:

B.A. - vocals, voices, yells, producer
Steve Sloppy - drums, producer
Bo'Ba Jam - bass, producer
Dr. Roadkill - guitar, producer

Additional musicians:

Rob Perkins - background vocals, photography, road crew
Paul Bohall - background vocals, road crew
Craig "R.V." Croomes - background vocals

...and a few others.

Calling this a Masterpiece is an understatement!

This is possibly the greatest pop punk record of all times, “Destroyed”. The album was originally released in ’89 by legendary punk label Toxic Shock. No collection is complete without this record!

This band’s producing demented, adolescent humor and actually less-than-stupid idiot rock. More often than not, these junk-culture-worshipping couch potatoes come up with hearty guffaw-inducing songs like I don’t wanna be a homosexual, Janie is a nazy and I want ‘em dead. For diehard Ramones fans: Sloppy Seconds write songs that are actually a bit more lyrically complicated than the Ramones, but are from the same loser, pseudo-half-wit perspective. The song Serious, co-written by Lukather, is also on the Alice Cooper album From the inside.

Their first full-length release, and perhaps their all-time classic album, with such memorable Sloppy hits as “I Don’t Wanna Be A Homosexual”, “Come Back Traci”, “Germany” and their incredible version of John Denver’s “Leaving On A Jet Plane”. This was the first co-release between MT and Toxic Shock. A vinyl version of the LP was also available on Toxic Shock only. The cover is a great parody of the famous Kiss “Destroyer” album cover. Also, on the inside of the CD is a picture of two of the Sloppy guys with Ace Frehley of Kiss, who is holding the Sloppy Seconds album cover! Cool! [unknown reviewer]

Track List:

1. I Don't Want To Be A Homosexual (5:05)
2. Come Back Traci (2:04)
3. Take You Home (1:24)
4. Black Roses (2:22)
5. Runnin' From The CIA (2:01)
6. The Horror Of Party Beach (2:09)
7. Blackmail (2:49)
8. So Fucked Up (2:34)
9. Germany (2:19)
10. Janie Is A Nazi (2:37)
11. I Want 'em Dead (3:33)
12. If I Had A Woman (2:53)
13. Veronica (2:42)
14. The Candy Man (1:34)
15. Steal Your Beer (1:40)
16. Time Bomb (1:42)
17. Serious [bonus track] (2:15)

For me, music can be a seasonal thing. Sometimes the bands are seasonal for a reason. For example, I rarely listen to heavy doses of AFI or the Misfits outside of the fall times (though select cuts like “Bullet” can put a smile on my face at any point during the year). Conversely, during summer time I play way more of your pop-punk standards like Snuff (I got their album Demmamussabebonk the first time I went to Hawaii and it will always remind me of that trip), the Queers, Screeching Weasel, and the Lillingtons. Many of these bands are getting back together and releasing records again and touring, so I figured that I’d share an under appreciated pop-punk band who fits in nicely with any of these pop-punk summer bands: Sloppy Seconds.

I first became aware of Sloppy Seconds long ago when I purchased the Nitro Records comp, Deep Thoughts. I really liked the two Sloppy Seconds songs on the album, but always forgot to buy their CDs. About a month ago a friend of mine burned me a copy of their first album Destroyed (calm down, I bought a copy online soon thereafter). Since then I have been tapping my feet and singing along to a pop-punk classic.

Like the aforementioned Queers and Screeching Weasel, Sloppy Seconds play Ramones-influenced punk rock. Where they stand out from their peers is in the unique vocal styling of frontman B.A (I shall attempt to describe his voice as Johnny Rotten mixed with John Fogerty) and their tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Hell, the whole album is tongue-in-cheek as the cover art is a spoof of the KISS album, Destroyer. For an example of their band‘s sense of humor, the first track is entitled “I Don’t Wanna Be a Homosexual,” yet starts off with a sampling of a John Waters film and then goes straight into a nice pro-gay song.

Just as the Clash wrote about what they saw going on around them, Sloppy Seconds deal with their immediate world as well, which consists of porn (there is a touching tribute to `80s porn queen Traci Lords in “Come Back Traci“), strippers, B-rated horror movies, girls, comic books, and partying. Some of my favorite tracks include “I Want ‘Em Dead,“ “I’m Tired of Running from the CIA” which features the classic hook line, “Mars needs women but Mars can wait, cuz I ain’t goin’ to masturbate!” and the song “Blackmail.” The track “So Fucked Up” sounds like it could have influenced the illustrious Andrew W.K. as it is a song about partying hard and the chorus consists of gang vocals shouting “so fucked up!” Also, since the band claims to have derived their name from playing covers, the album features a sweet cover of “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane” that puts Me First and Gimme Gimmes' rendition to shame. However, their cover of the song “The Candy Man,” while amusing on the first listen, quickly becomes a throwaway track. As with any band of this genre, the album has over 21 songs which gets to be a bit too much. Yet, since the songs are so damn fun it doesn’t really matter.

Now that the sun is out here in northern California and Spring has officially hit, it is time to dust off those fun summer records. Destroyed by Sloppy Seconds is a great album and a much overlooked piece of pop-punk music that any fan of the genre will love, and will definitely come to be part of my seasonal summer rotation. Chet Baker and Art Pepper - The Route (1956)
MP3 | 320kbps | Covers | RS.com | 124mb
Genre: Jazz / cool, West Coast
Recording Date: July 26, 1956 | Venue: Forum Theatre, Los Angeles
Time: 52:28 | Label: Pacific Jazz

Allmusic.com:
This 1989 CD issue compiles all known sides cut during a July 26, 1956, session led by Chet Baker (trumpet) and Art Pepper (alto sax). Keen-eyed enthusiasts will note that this particular date occurred during a remarkable week -- July 23 through July 31 -- of sessions held at the behest of Pacific Jazz label owner and session producer Dick Bock at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles. The recordings made during this week not only form The Route, but three other long-players as well: Lets Get Lost (The Best of Chet Baker Sings), Chet Baker and Crew, and Chet Baker Quintet at the Forum Theatre. Likewise, these were the first sides cut by Baker since returning from his triumphant and extended stay in Europe. The Route compiles all 11 tracks by the sextet featuring Richie Kamuca (tenor sax), Pete Jolly (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), and Stan Levey (drums) in support of Baker and Pepper. Bock had no immediate plans to use these recordings for any one album; that is to say he incorporated the tracks throughout various compilations released on Pacific Jazz. Three months later, however, Baker and Pepper did record with completely different personnel for the expressed purpose of issuing what would become known as Playboys and alternately Picture of Heath. Perhaps encouraged by the swinging interaction on Pepper's "Tynan Time" and "Minor Yours," both tracks were featured at this session as well as during the Picture of Heath collaboration. There are a few unexpected moments of sheer brilliance spread throughout, such as the Baker-penned title track, which contains supple and nicely contrasting solos from Kamuca and Vinnegar -- whose solid pendulum accuracy swings all through this collection. The Route is recommended for completists as well as curious consumers wishing to expand their knowledge of the light and airy rhythms that typify the cool West Coast jazz scene of the mid-'50s.

Personnel:
Chet Baker, trumpet
Art Pepper, alto sax
Pete Jolly, piano
Richie Kamuca, tenor sax
Stan Levey, drums
Leroy Vinnegar, bass

2. The Route (Baker) 5:04

5. Little Girl (Henry, Hyde) 4:14
6. Ol' Croix (Pepper) 5:27
7. I Can't Give You Anything But Love (Fields, McHugh) 4:07

Genre: Jazz, Fusion, World, Brazilian | Label: Columbia Legacy (2-046159) | Year of Release: 1975

[...] One of Shorter's best-selling albums from the 1970s was Native Dancer, a Brazilian-oriented jazz-fusion masterpiece that boasts Herbie Hancock on acoustic piano and electric keyboards, and employs such Brazilian talent as singer Milton Nascimento (a superstar in Brazil) and percussionist Airto Moreira. Everything on this melodic, consistently lyrical effort is a jewel, and that includes Hancock's "Joanna's Theme" as well as pieces by Nascimento ("From the Lonely Afternoons," "Ponta de Areia," "Tarde," "Lilia," and "Miracle of the Fishes") and by Shorter himself ("Ana Maria," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Diana"). Reissued on CD by Columbia in 1990, Native Dancer is clearly among Shorter's most essential albums.

Whitesnake - Whitesnake (SHM-CD)
FLAC | Rock | appr. 324 MB
Source: The Eternal Hunting Grounds | EAC, log, cue, covers
2008 (Originally released 1987) | Label: Universal Music

When Whitesnake broke into the spotlight with Slide It In (1984), a battalion of cynical critics predicted the band's success couldn't last, but Coverdale and company silenced all the naysayers with 1987's self-titled album, which rocketed to No. 2 on the Billboard album chart. The record was driven by the pumping rocker "Here I Go Again" and the tender power ballad "Is This Love," but the band's mainstream appeal might have had as much to do with their unabashedly sexual videos as with their bubblegum metal. The clips, which seemed to splash across MTV every 20 minutes, starred Coverdale's girlfriend and B-movie actress Tawny Kitaen, and highlighted her busty, scantily clad body in various provocative poses. Volume and T&A--a metalhead's wet dream.

Track List:
1. CRYING IN THE RAIN
2. BAD BOYS
3. STILL OF THE NIGHT
4. HERE I GO AGAIN
5. GIVE ME ALL YOUR LOVE
6. IS THIS LOVE
7. CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT

Robert Cray - I Was Warned 1992

Robert Cray - I Was Warned
Wv (+CUE+Log)+Covers | 325 Mb | Mp3 CBR - 320 kbps | 115 Mb
Blues; Blues - Soul

Underestimating Robert Cray is a real danger. He's so good at what he does – singing, writing and especially playing – that his albums have an effortless feel, as if it's easy to turn out soul-baring performances year after year. But his catalog packs a mighty punch, growing richer in time. On his new album, I Was Warned, Cray's out there telling the truth again, as strong as ever.
Working mainly in a Stax/Volt groove, with the Memphis Horns aboard once more, Cray examines broken relationships and seeks definition as a man. He may mourn that he's "Just a Loser," as on the opening track, but that's an atypical observation. Cray is given to taking hard looks at himself with confessional bluntness. But as he chronicles his faults and the endless quest to do the right thing, he comes to understand his strengths as well. In "The Price I Pay," for example, he sounds weary of bearing the burden of unreciprocated love, but the song's lilting arrangement and Cray's own singsong guitar solo hint at something positive coming out of this trial.
That life goes on is an overriding theme of I Was Warned, and nowhere is it better explored than on three consecutive songs near the end of the disc: "A Whole Lotta Pride," "A Picture of a Broken Heart" and the devastating "He Don't Live Here Anymore." Cray's soloing is superb throughout, from the popping, angular lines enlivening "I'm a Good Man" to the complex, multitextured workout on the title track; it's most revealing of the inner man, however, on "He Don't Live Here Anymore." This one's for the ages, an auspicious moment on an album rife with commanding performances.

Husky Rescue - Country Falls

Husky Rescue - Country Falls
MP3 | 192kbps | 78MB | Host: RS | Type: LP
Genre: Chillout/Downtempo | Release: 2004 | Label: Catskills records

The initial gentle slide guitar invokes memories of Pink Floyd's "A Pillow of Winds" from their classic album Meddle, but as the gentle, wispy vocals of Reeta Korhola make their entrance, so end the comparisons between Floyd's sorely overlooked ballad and Country Falls' opener, "Sweet Little Kitten." With a slew of EPs and singles released in 2004 on Catskills, Helsinki-based Husky Rescue quietly established their little place on the mantle next to Air, Stereolab, and Architecture in Helsinki (the latter band Finnish in name only). However, unlike the aforementioned bands, the group places an emphasis on the laid-back elements of country & western motifs in place of vibrant analog synths and chic, stylish lyrics. While the results are not groundbreaking, Husky Rescue have crafted a slow, lazy record that is ideal for background listening and relaxing from start to finish.

Tracks
1. "Sweet Little Kitten" – 4:45
2. "Summertime Cowboy" – 4:06
3. "New Light of Tomorrow" – 4:52
4. "Sunset Drive" – 3:59
5. "My World" – 4:50
6. "City Lights" – 4:25
7. "Gasoline Girl" – 4:13
8. "Rainbow Flows" – 5:52
9. "Sleep Tight Tiger" – 4:37
10. "Mean Street" – 6:45
11. "Good Man" – 7:52

Violinist Fritz Kreisler was one of the most beloved and best known of early recording era musicians. His burnished tone and patrician phrasing were quintessentially Viennese, and the warmth of his playing won him devoted followers wherever he appeared. So great was his fame and the affection in which he was held that he survived a blaze of controversy when he revealed in 1935 that many of the short pieces he had performed as transcriptions of such composers as Couperin, Vivaldi, and Pugnani were, in fact, his own work. While the critics fumed, the public expressed little concern and continued to pack his concert appearances. ~

Fritz Kreisler (February 2, 1875 – January 29, 1962) was an Austrian-born violinist and composer; one of the most famous violinists of his day. He is noted for his sweet tone and expressive phrasing. Like many great violinists of his generation, he produced a characteristic sound, which was immediately recognizable as his own. Although he was a violinist of the Franco-Belgian school, his style is nonetheless reminiscent of the gemütlich (cozy) lifestyle of pre-war Vienna.

Kreisler's personal style of playing on record bears a resemblance to Mischa Elman with a tendency towards expansive tempi, a continuous and varied vibrato, remarkably expressive phrasing, and a melodic approach to passage work. Kreisler employs considerable use of portamento and rubato. However considerable performance contrasts exist between Kreisler and Mischa Elman on the shared standard repertoire with the concerto of Felix Mendelssohn serving as one example.

He performed and recorded his own version of the Paganini D major violin concerto-first movement. This version is rescored and in some places reharmonised. The orchestral introduction is completely rewritten in some places. The overall effect is of a late nineteenth century work. ~ Wikipedia
